MELVILLE AFC/MELVILLE UNITED
Melville AFC was formed in 1972, initially as Melville District Schoolboys AFC. In 1981 the shift was made to the current headquarters at Gower Park, with clubrooms initially based on private land at the southwestern corner of the park on Kahikatea Dr. Melville gained promotion to the northern league in 1982. From there they steadily worked their way up the ladder, winning the northern league third division in 1991, the first division in 1993, and the northern premier league in 1995.
In 1996 new criteria for the national league meant near neighbours Waikato United were no longer allowed to operate as a one-team entity at that level. They amalgamated with Melville to form Melville United, and it was under this name that the new entity contested the summer national league in 1996-97 and 1997-98.
Melville United were Chatham Cup runners-up in 2003, and named as Waikato Club Team of the Year by Sport Waikato, the first time this award has been won by football. In 2009 Melville again won the northern premier league title and were once more named as Waikato Club Team of the Year across all sports.

Coaches: Geoff Kettle and Tommy Finnegan. Melville finished 9th in a 10-team league, wining four and drawing five of their 18 matches.
20-page club magazine, Vol 2 aired the suggestion that there is talk of the northern league team adopting a goat as their mascot. Editorial offers thanks to Tony Tatler for many hours spent on erecting and installation on floodlights on Gower Park.
Northern League aftermatch functions held at Glenview Community Centre.

1995 Northern Premier League
The programme price had gone up from 50c to $1 in 12 months. Inflation was rampant at the time. 20 pages, including a sponsor's directory, player profile, results to date, points table, draws, though no editorial apart from 3 paragraphs from chairman Brian Coe. Season-standard cover - just a pity it didn't feature a spherical ball.
At least Steve Williams' team won the premier league for the first time.

1996-97 Summer National League
Melville United - a 1996 amalgamation of Waikato United and Melville AFC - inherited the national league mantle and produced a generally excellent programme, put together by Grant Stantiall, Stuart Woods and Dwayne Barlow.
24 pages including a league-standard cover over-printed with matchday details, columns from chairman Paul Collins, coach Steve Williams, commercial maanger Steve Owens, "This week in Waikato soccer history" by Ron Anorak, opinionated columns from Grant Stantiall, and more provocative columns from Cordwainer Bull. This was about as good as it got for Waikato national league programmes.
In an end of season review of the programme, Stantiall wrote: "The programme has not been as controversial as in previous seasons, however its purpose must still be to provoke thoughts on the game as well as offer something readbale, humourous and entertaining. We did receive one complaint from Jeremy Ruane. I approached Jeremy and managed to resolve a few reservations that he may have had over the content." Nice.

1997-98 Summer National League
Melville finished seventh in an 11-team league.
Grant Stantiall was back as editor and had a lively 28-page programme, printed on glossy paper by Print House. Despite the programme being bigger than ever, it still looked like a wealth of information had to be crammed in, and the layout was often more than slightly cluttered, with a host of fonts and print sizes used. Once again some excellent editorial content though.
Melville squad: Craig Farmer, Neil Mouncher, Tony Valentine, Hoani Edwards, Nobby Stiles, Declan Edge, Roddy Cooper, Brian Hayes, Matt Williams, Hamish Marsh, Andy Irvine, Steven Rigby, Matthew Beldham, Aaron Kingi, Steve McLoughlin, Mark Cossey, Darren Fellowes, Gordon-Jon Thompson, Paul Nixon, Craig Murphy, Stu Watene.

Melville United v Otorohanga, 12.6.1999
In 1999 in the third round of the Chatham Cup, Melville drew Otorohanga at home - and duly recorded the club's biggest-ever cup win with a 10-0 victory.
But just as historic was Melville's spirited bid to promote the game Ranfurly Shield-style, in which they took the game against non-league opposition to the Otorohanga Domain, complete with full 20-page match programme.
In the programme acting Melville team manager Bruce Holloway wrote: "One of the responsibilities of being a top club is being aware of your role as guardians of the game. If this (moving the game to Otorohanga) helps soccer establish a firmer foothold in King Country then there will be more winners than losers in this Chatham cup round.
Otorohanga, formed in the 1950s, had won the district Sport Waikato "Club of the Year award for the previous two years, however on the day they couldn't quite muster the same enthusiasm. Indeed, they didn't even bother opening their clubrooms and the players were left to have a free-wheeling aftermatch at the lounge bar of the Otorohanga Hotel.

2003 Chatham Cup quarterfinal
Melville programmes were a bit hit and miss in 2003, but the effort was made for this Chatham Cup quarterfinal, in which Melville beat 6-times Cup winners North Shore United - a national league club at the time, though out of season - 5-1 en route to the final.
In his programme column coach Paul Nixon wrote: "Cup football is a time for dreaming, where nothing matters excpet for the ball hitting the back of the net and off everybody goes on a merry dance of celebrations and the dream continues. Never mind the hard work of ploughing through the mud at training, the constant flow of information about tactics and the game plan. Today's game is all about the players. Is this the biggest game that our players will experience in their time at the club?" As it happens, the answer was no, as Melville duly made it all the way to the final.

Unusual in the annals of programme covers, is this one from the September 4 match against East Coast Bays, which features Melville players involved in an all-in brawl (Wanderers probably). A feature of the 2008 programme was a "Wine of the Week" column by US import Matt Friel. Friel maintained a proud tradition of Waikato imports being highly familiar with alcohol, but in his case it was at least hi-brow wine, particularly reds, which he recommended in every home programme.

2012 Northern Premier League
A poor year for the club at northern league level, with Declan Edge's team relegated after finishing bottom.
This was mirrored in the programme, which was usually just a four-page fold-over on most matchdays.

2013 Melville v Ngaruawahia
Midway through the 2013 season Melville reverted to a standardised colour cover for their match programme. Note how the cover somehow managed the word "Melville" no fewer than six times. No mistaking which club it was from, then.

2014 Melville United v Papatoetoe September 13 (Promotion decider)
It was a spartan, simple programme (4 page, A5) but it marked promotion back to the premier league for Melville. They had not held a promotion spot all season, and not till the final whistle of the final game did they secure one, winning 4-0.

2017 Northern League Division 1 v Waitemata
It was the start of a new era for Melville under new coaches Sam Wilkinson and Michael Mayne - and a lot of new faces - but Melville ultimately failed to gain promotion by two points - despite notching 16 wins and 50 points, a tally that would have got them promoted in almost any other season.

2018 Northern League Division 1 v Mt Albert Ponsonby
Skipper Aaron Scott holds the Thompson Shield, won a week earlier as Melville surged to the title in majestic form. Melville’s northern league season was not only the most successful single season on record for the club in terms of winning matches, but also a statistician’s delight.
Melville won 20 of their 22 matches, drawing one and losing one – and lifted the Thompson Shield with three matches to spare, eventually winning by a whopping margin of 16 points. Their tally of 61 points was a record for a 12-team first division, in a league which was first contested in 1965. Their goal tally of 71 was a club record, while they conceded just 18 goals.
