This trophy, presented by The Football Association in 1925, was competed for between major representative teams, on a challenge system from 1928 until the start of the national league in 1970
Canterbury won this match 5-4, in their first defence after winning the Trophy off Auckland.

1988 Winfield Challenge Shield
The Winfield Challenge Shield was introduced in 1988, donated by the tobacco company to Auckland to mark its centennial celebrations, noting provincial football had declined to a level well below that of any other major code. It ran along similar lines to the Ranfurly Shield.
Waikato lost this one 3-0, to John Adshead's Auckland team.
